We are in the middle of Advent… and that’s the right place for today’s feast. The Roman Liturgy celebrates the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin on December 8, half way through the season of hope and expectation for Our Lord’s coming. And this happens precisely because Mary of Nazareth is the perfect model of Christian waiting. Vested with heavenly beauty and supreme holiness, “the Virgin Mother bore Him in her womb with love beyond all telling”, as we read in the Second Preface of Advent.

Fondazzjoni Belt Victoria, the Gozitan foundation for Rabat’s heritage, is issuing yet two new etchings by Gozitan young artist Justin Falzon featuring two masterpieces by Italian artist Mattia Preti found at St George’s Basilica. The first is Saint George Victorious over the Dragon, commissioned in 1678 by the Governor of Gozo Fra Francesco de Corduba, and the second Our Lady and Souls in Purgatory, commissioned in 1688 by Giovanni Gourgion, secretary to Grandmaster Adrien de Wignacourt, in 1688. The artist included in the etchings the beautiful marble altars where the altarpieces are hung.

Between Monday 9 and Thursday 12 September, St George’s Parish Vicar Mgr Felix Tabone was in Rome for a short holiday. Dun Feliċ, as he is known by all and sundry, makes it a point to visit Rome at least twice a year; during the last few years he has visited Rome every January and September to have some time for himself away from the hustle and bustle that one finds at St George’s with its twelve daily Masses and confessions on a regular basis.

175th anniversary celebrations of titular statue announced on Sunday
This year’s Festa went out with a bang! Following the customary words of thanks to all those who organised and helped out with the festive celebrations, at the end of last Sunday’s Eucharistic Benediction, Archpriest Mgr Pawlu Cardona announced that next year our parish community will be celebrating an important anniversary: 175 years of the titular statue of St George. The announcement was welcomed with a warm applause by the congregation that packed the Basilica after the Pontifical Procession.
